The tendinous center portion of the diaphragm is called the central tendon (centrum tendineum). The diaphragm is the main muscle responsible for breathing (respiration). The muscle tissue that forms the diaphragm&rsquo;s edges is striated (i.e. skeletal) muscle tissue.
